If you’re a parent, you know that naps rule the day. They determine meal times, play times, and, most importantly, everyone’s moods. So when it comes time to schedule a family or child portrait session, one of the first questions I often hear is, “But what about nap time?”

Here’s the good news: with a little planning, we can absolutely create a portrait session that fits beautifully into your child’s routine. You don’t need to worry about cranky faces or missed naps. Together, we’ll make it work.
1. Choose the Right Time of Day

Every child has their best time of day, usually the window right after they’ve woken up from a nap and had a snack. For some families, this might be mid-morning. For others, it’s the later afternoon.
When we plan your session, I’ll ask about your child’s sleep schedule so we can choose a time that lines up with their natural rhythm. A happy, rested child is far more likely to give us those genuine smiles and playful moments you’ll want to remember.
2. Keep Routines as Normal as Possible

On session day, try to keep the rest of the day predictable. If your child usually naps at noon, we’ll aim for an early morning session. If they nap in the afternoon, a golden-hour evening session may work perfectly.
Consistency is comforting to little ones. They feel more confident when you stick to regular meal and nap schedules, which makes your photos appear more relaxed and happy.
3. Bring Comfort Items

Even well-rested children can feel a little shy in front of the camera. Bringing along a familiar blanket or lovie can provide comfort and reassurance. Sometimes, the sweetest photos are the ones where a child is snuggled up with the items that mean the most to them.
4. Build in Flexibility

Sometimes kids don’t follow the timetable we set up. That’s why I build extra time into every session. If your little one needs a snack break, a quick cuddle, or just a moment to reset, we’ll take it.
The beauty of lifestyle-inspired sessions is that they don’t have to be stiff or rushed. Some of the most meaningful images come from those in-between moments when families are simply together.
5. Trust the Process

Parents sometimes feel anxious if their child isn’t smiling on command or following directions perfectly. But here’s the secret: they don’t need to. I don’t expect children to perform. It’s my responsibility to create a space where they can be themselves without fear.
Whether that’s laughter, curiosity, or even a pouty expression, it’s all part of your family’s story, and it all belongs in your gallery.
Why It’s Worth the Effort
Planning a portrait session around a nap schedule isn’t just possible. It’s one of the best ways to ensure you get authentic, heartfelt images. A well-rested child means a more relaxed experience for everyone. And when you can fully focus on being present with your family instead of worrying about meltdowns, the portraits reflect that calm connection.
Let’s Create Something Stress-Free and Beautiful

Your family’s story deserves to be remembered in a way that feels true to you. Not rushed, not forced, and definitely not stressful. With thoughtful planning and a little flexibility, we’ll create portraits that capture this season of life just as it is, naps and all.
If you’re ready to plan a session that works with your family’s rhythm, not against it, I’d love to guide you every step of the way.
